UK wind enters new league

English

The world’s largest offshore wind farm was launched today in Thanet, South England. The 300 megawatt farm, constructed by Swedish power company Vatenfall, will power approximately 200,000 homes and take the UK’s total wind energy capacity to 5.1 gigawatts, according to BusinessGreen.

Speaking before the official opening ceremony for the wind farm, local MP and chinadialogue board member Laura Sandys said: “Today is a really important day for Thanet. I have been a passionate advocate of the wind farms and believe that this now places Thanet at the heart of wind-farm development in the UK.”

But the Thanet farm won’t be the largest for long. Vatenfall now plans to move ahead with a 1,200 megawatt wind farm in East Anglia in the east of England.
